Wine connoisseurs savor the taste of Italy's Chiantis, Bordeauxs from the south of France and Chardonnays from Napa Valley, California. But most people can't afford the cost of traveling to wineries in Italy, the south of France or even the Napa Valley vineyards to enjoy their favorite wines. To receive these wines customers must rely on wine shippers to ship their favorite products directly to them. Wine shipping companies have sprung up across the nation, making it easier for customers to obtain wines in far-flung places across the country and around the world. Outside of traveling to wine vineyards, enjoying wines from around the globe is easier, thanks to wine shippers. All that is needed to complete an order is the type of wine and the quantity, and wine lovers will have their favorite wine in a glass in just a matter of days. Wine Shipping Laws Are Complex It may seem easy, but shipping wines imported from domestic and international locations isn't for the novice. It takes skill, expertise and in-depth knowledge of not only how to ship and protect the wines, but the procedures for shipping and distributing them to different states. Each state has its own laws about wine distribution, and regulations are complex and change all the time. It takes a competent wine shipping company to keep up with ever-changing laws. You can blame the complex alcohol distribution laws on Prohibition. After laws prohibiting alcohol were repealed in the 1930s, individual states were granted the legislative power to enact laws about alcohol consumption, distribution and sales. Take Michigan. A new state law passed in January 2009 makes it illegal for retailers to ship wines to anyone in the state. There are only a handful of states that allow wine packaging and wine shipping companies to ship with few, if any, restrictions. California, Colorado, Wisconsin and Oregon are among them. But other states, such as Alaska, Ohio and South Carolina, have various restrictions for wine shippers. Forget about wine shippers exporting their products to Arizona, Georgia or Maine. They are among more than a dozen states where it is illegal to direct ship wines. And some states, such as North Carolina and Florida, have made wine shipments a felony. Wine Packaging Is Also Regulated Wine packaging and labeling also comes with their own special requirements, which can vary by state and by shipping provider. Wine packaging labels, for example, are strictly regulated. Wine labels are required by law to identify brand, type, where bottled, net volume and alcohol content by volume.
