Questions Answered About Foundation and Cover Up
I was doing a lecture this week and I notice the same questions where always coming up. What is the right colour of foundation for my skin? What is the difference between oil based and oil free foundation. How do I cover my mole? These questions are valid and the answers are often confusing for the everyday non-make up artist person. So let me see if I can answer these questions. Unfortunately, many people will be disillusioned to know that one colour foundation or cover-up is rarely going to give an even coverage. Our skin even though it covers our entire body does not have only one tone so it is a lot to ask from a make up to supply one colour to even out a tone in the skin. We usually require two colours to give us a more natural appearance. One should compare colour against the under of our wrist for a close comparison. In a cirular motion apply a small amount of darker and a small amount of lighter colour and blend and spread downward on your skin. Always start off with a small amount, thinner coats look and feel more natural. Blending takes practice. Now to confuse issues more the cosmetic world has developed a new cover up product. For example Mineral Wet/Dry powder, is ingenious as it has all your requirements in one. The only thing you need is a bit of experience using the product. The wet/dry powder is used with a sponge or a kabuki brush and dampened with water for a matte finish. Once the powder has dried it can be used as a face powder or under make up (the benefit to the wet/dry powder is the base is Mineral, an added plus as it does not clog pores) When it comes to oil based and oil free foundations, the oil free foundations are lighter on the skin and tend to clog the pores less. The oil-based foundations are used when there is a lot of skin damage or marks. The problem with oil-based foundations is they tend to make the skin feel heavy and they are harder to remove. How does one cover a mole? This question is often asked and very difficult to answer. The reason for the difficulty is because the skin on a mole or skin imperfection is thicker and usually darker. The foundation cover-ups are not enough. For these covers correctors are best. Correctors are liquid pigments that neutralize the tone of the area you are working on to give a more even colour when you apply the final coat of foundation. For example a yellow or orange. Thankfully, in the make up industry we are using products for healthier more natural looking skin. If I was going to advise some one with very little experience in Make up, I would suggest they use a mineral based wet/dry powder as a base before make up, and play a little with blending colours and textures.
